The somewhat ambiguous title: "Economic downturn barely noticeable in M&A in the insurance market" indicates that the M&A market in insurance is somewhat uncertain. Although the media elaborates on several negative market scenarios, our expectation is that after a steady year in 2022, 2023 will be an unprecedented year in terms of M&A activities concerning insurance brokers. As indicated in the Transaction Monitor, the capital market for acquisitions has certainly not yet dried up and banks still take a positive stance towards financing new acquisitions (especially by parties with a private equity shareholder).
As a M&A boutique we do not notice any reduced appetite on the buying side. Although a number of parties put more emphasis on integrating and others focus of the Belgium market for growth, new entrants and foreign consolidators entering the Dutch market result in an undiminished strong demand, thereby retaining recent years’ high valuations.
